Rock & Roll
September 19, 2008

Went to Oktoberfest at Oaks Park tonight with friends and had a fun time eating bratwurst and dancing to the oompa bands. Took some time to catch this ride in motion. The thing I love about this shot is the three girls in front.

The Queen of the West Churns the Willamette
September 16, 2008

Was lucky enough to catch this while visiting friends at their condo on the river here in Portland. Click the photo larger to see how beautiful she is!

The Queen of the West is a paddlewheeler purpose-built in 1995 to ply the Columbia, Willamette, and Snake rivers tracing the Lewis and Clark journey through Idaho, Washington, and Oregon to the Pacific Coast. It can sleep up to 163 passengers in 73 outside cabins on five day/four night or eight day/seven night cruises departing from Portland February through December.

European Peacock Butterfly (Påfågelöga)
September 15, 2008

Was finally able to get these photos from my Sweden trip off my little P&S camera. Took this in the church cemetary near our rental apartment on one of the few sunny days we had while we were there. Visit the Trek Nature page of Gert Ellstrom for another great photo and information on this colorful butterfly.

Old Greyhound Station
September 7, 2008

Found this derelict Greyhound Bus Station last week under the levels of freeway in Southwest Portland. I wonder what the story is on it? I searched around a bit on Google for information but found nothing. The corner of the building has a sign saying the location will soon be a power substation for PGE.

Ink and Poster Edges filters added in PSE6.

Spires of Stockholm City Hall
September 6, 2008

It was a grey and rainy day, perfect for touring museums or indoor landmarks. Stockholm City Hall is famous for being the location for the presentation of the Nobel Prizes in darkest December of each year.

The greyness of our day and the bright sky overwhelmed my cheapie P&S making the building look very dark. To counteract the darkness somewhat, I added Poster Edges filter in PSE6. I liked that the filter addition brought out the detail on the spire medallions which were kind of lost in the original photo.

The Palms Motor Hotel With Free TV
September 5, 2008

Ah, the Fifties! I love this neon and think it quite ironic being in Portland, The Land Of Rain.

I've been hoping to capture this sign for awhile....basically ever since we moved here a year ago. Tonight, we had dinner in the Overlook Neighborhood nearby so I got my chance since we were there after dark.

Mt. Rainier From The Air
September 4, 2008

This was the opening photo on my trip to Sweden. (I'm posting them now since I had no internet access the two weeks I was there.) Was lucky enough to sit on the side of the plane that Rainier was on and we had clear, cloudless skies most of the flight. (The sun never actually went down the entire flight from Portland, OR, to Amsterdam!) Looking down from the plane, I was also fortunate I had my tiny P&S in my handbag and quickly got several good snaps of the mountain before we zoomed past.

Had to do a little work in Photoshop to remove a severe bluish/grayish cast from either the atmosphere or the airplane windows or both just so the clouds would look white again. Also, the pic was very grainy since my P&S is a cheapie so I used Despeckle and Smartblur.

Waxing Gibbous Moon, Stockholm, Sweden, August 11, 2008
September 2, 2008

This was a fun moon shoot in Stockholm because I was able to watch the entire moon-rise/moon-set process over about three-and-a-half hours. The moon rose just before sunset, floated above the horizon for a while then went down very near where it came up. Very different from where I live.

Moonrise, 6:53 PM; moonset, 10:42 PM. The shot isn't perfect. A little slow for the available light and not having brought a tripod with me to Sweden. I braced my camera in the corner of my window frame so the moon isn't crisp as I would really like. Still, it was a fun, exciting evening!

Rainbow At Sunset, Nacka Finntorp, Sweden
September 1, 2008

This is a shot from my trip to Sweden in mid-August. One night we had the amazing sight of a full, double rainbow at sunset. I had no internet access while I was there so I'm posting some of the photos now.

Nacka is a suburb of Stockholm, Sweden.
