Skidmore Fountain
August 30, 2008

Yes, Henry Weinhard actually offered to pipe his beer through this fountain for the dedication in 1888. Skidmore Fountain is Portland's oldest commissioned work of public art. The fountain is inscribed with the quote, "Good citizens are the riches of a city," a line from the dedicatory speech by C.E.S. Wood, a member of the Fountain Committee.

New York critics at the time were irritated that such a beautiful sculpture was in Portland, a "western city with a be-whiskered, be-pistoled lot of frontiersmen" and that it looked down "upon buggies and buck-boards, and shirt-sleeves and slouch hats in Oregon instead of decorating the Central Park (in New York City)."

The Steel Bridge
August 29, 2008

A through truss, double lift bridge built in 1912. It carries railroad and pedestrian traffic on the lower deck, and the Pacific Highway West No. 1W (former Oregon Route 99W), MAX Light Rail and a vintage streetcar on the upper deck, making it one of the most multimodal in the world. It is the only double-deck bridge with independent lifts in the world and the second oldest vertical lift bridge in North America, after the nearby Hawthorne Bridge.

Playing in Salmon Street Springs
August 27, 2008

This is one of the most popular fountains in Portland since it was built in 1988. I liked watching the kids distorting the water flow then trying to catch it in the photo.

Ira Keller Forecourt Fountain
August 26, 2008

I'm so happy I took the fountain walk on Sunday! I think water inspires me!

The Ira Keller Fountain was designed and built in 1971 "as waterfalls echoing the natural water qualities of the magnificent cascades along the Coumbia River." The fountain is nearly an acre in size in downtown Portland! New York Times critic, Ada Louise Huxtable, declared this fountain "one of the most important urban spaces since the Renaissance."

The Dreamer, Fountain in Pettygrove Park
August 25, 2008

Took the Portland Water Bureau's Fountains Walking Tour yesterday and found this gem in an out-of-the-way park in Southwest Portland. The artist is Manuel Izquierdo, professor emeritus at Pacific Northwest College of Art.

"The Dreamer speaks of hope of beauty and serenity, of love, and for a better life in our midst," the artist says of this work.

Izquierdo made The Dreamer from surplus Navy bronze that he bought and cleaned. He filled the sculpture with foam so falling rain would make a gentle sound like a kettledrum instead of the ringing it would make if hollow.

Light and Medallion, Moreland Theater
The Moreland Theater, in our little Westmoreland downtown is a great venue built in 1926 with wonderful period deco details such as this light medallion in the lobby. Grain and ink filters added in PSE6.

Painter's View
A random reader of my older daily photo blog at eBlogger emailed asking to see more tulip farm photos from this past April. To that random reader: You made my day! So, I've been posting them to a new gallery here on Smugmug. What a great day this was! We had stormy, overcast skies so the flower colors were rich and gorgeous.
