My First HDR shot. Yay!
March 2, 2009

Took this photo overlooking Oaks Bottom looking toward the amusement park. This is very exciting way to make photos! I'm using a a trial copy to see if I like the software which is the reason there are watermarks in the image.

What do you think?

Beach At Sauvie Island
March 1, 2009

My friend, June, and I drove out to see what was happening at Sauvie Island today. It reminded me a lot of The Netherlands for its pastoral setting, the narrow roads, and the dike all around. This photo is the Columbia River side of the island.

This photo is a first attempt at getting better using layers in Photoshop Elements. I also experimented with a Topaz Adjust Filter I got on trial.

Now Arriving At Union Station
February 13, 2009

Today I picked up a friend at Portland's Union Station. My friend had already arrived by the time I negotiated all the one-way streets and don't-even-think-of-turning-here street signs so I didn't get a chance to go inside. Still, it's pretty impressive!

Italian Renaissance Style; $300,000 total cost; dedicated February 14, 1896. Now it anchors the north end of Portland's Transit Mall. From here, travelers can catch the MAX Light Rail , a city or Greyhound bus. And downtown Portland or Chinatown or Pioneer Courthouse Square are just a few blocks away. More info at the link.

Pork
February 8, 2009

A couple of days ago, feeling frustrated when the US Senate battle was raging over the stimulus bill, I wandered around with my camera. Where I ended up was this neighborhood park where the Sellwood Bridge crosses the Willamette. The bridge, built in 1925, is falling apart. In fact on the far side, it's sliding into the river. Buses and trucks are prohibited from driving on it anymore.

Since we moved to Oregon almost two years ago, efforts by the County to finance a new bridge of which there are plenty of plans, have been mired in argument and lack of ability to get enough capital to execute the project or one like it nearby.

This is something we really need fixed, in my opinion, given that Portland is a city built on two major rivers. But, as I understand the Senate Republican argument, it's Pork. Pork.

While I will happily accept a check from them for $10 grand (one of their most recent alternate proposals), I fail to see how sending me a check for $10,000 will get this important bridge rebuilt.

Two At A Time Socks
February 6, 2008

Finishing up on my latest knit project--two socks at a time! Though it looks complicated, it's actually not. I switched to this sock-knitting method after making my last pair two different sizes. Now, knitted at the same time, there's no forgetting what I did to one so I can do it on the other. And--both socks are the same size! Hooray!

I put a glowing edges filter on this shot because the original shot looked boring and I liked the cool, greenish/bluish glow on the needles.

(For any curious fellow sock knitters who haven't tried this method, I used a book I'd recommend: 2-at-a-time SOCKS)

Painted Lady
February 5, 2009

Winter is a good time to walk past this neighborhood house with a camera! Usually, the trees and foliage blocks most of the view of this stunning Painted Lady. I added a Poser Edges filter to accentuate the lines of the house and the contrast between the colors.

"Turn on the lights. I don't want to go home in the dark." --O'Henry
February 3, 2009

My neighbor's house looks so inviting at dusk with the lights aglow. I think part of what I like about this photo is the horizontal tree branches above the house.

This is my first time trying an unsharp mask technique from a tutorial on DGrin. Not sure this is the subject for it, though I do notice a little more distinction on the roof line and in the trees by tweaking the amount of the mask.

Sean spent the day at our house. Grandpa is his favorite person here. After dinner they settled down to empty the toy basket crash plastic bowling pins.
