A swale. It's a landscape device for managing stormwater runoff without using hardscape materials. It returns rainwater to the soil more slowly and filters pollutants. I'd never heard of it before moving back to Oregon last year. Now I'm starting to see them everywhere. This swale was installed around the old armory building downtown which is the clubhouse for Portland Center Stage Theater.
